Prof. (Dr.) K.N. Chandrasekharan Pillai, Director, National Judicial Academy has taken charge on the 7th July, 2011. As the Director, NJA he is the Principal Executive Officer of NJA. The Director is appointed by the Chairman of NJA, the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India.

Hailing from Alleppey District of Kerala, Prof. Pillai completed his B.Sc. from the Kerala University. Thereafter, he has completed LL.B. and LL.M. from Delhi University. He was awarded Baboo Piarelal Memorial Prize and Law Union Prize for securing first position in the LL.M. examination.  He secured his second LL.M. and SJD (Doctor of Juridical Sciences) from the University of Michigan, USA.

Prof. Pillai practised law for a while at Delhi before joining the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University. Thereafter, he joined the Cochin University of Science and Technology and was later Dean Faculty of Law and Director of School of Legal Studies.

Prof. Pillai was Director of Indian Law Institute, New Delhi from 2004 to 2009 and was also Member of the Indian Law Commission and a Member of the syndicate, representing UGC in the Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin.

He has extensively researched on Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure and Human Rights.  He is the founder Director of NIALS, Cochin, presently NUALS. He has extensively written on topics of importance in different branches of Law, authored several books and revised Prof. R.V. Kelkar’s Books on Criminal Procedure.

He is the editor of the Journal Section of Supreme Court cases. He was also the editor of Cochin University Law Review and Journal of Indian Law Institute, New Delhi. He has been on the editorial boards of the Cochin University Law Review, Academy Law Review, Kerala Bar Council News and Bangalore Law Journal. He is currently member of the Executive Council of the NLU, Delhi and Central University at Kasargod. He is also Member of the Academic Councils of National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Cochin, National Law School, Jodhpur and National Law School, Cuttack.
